The Gyroscope

Objects: A Gyroscope. A small Box with Lid. A Glass or something with an edge. A Peg.

How many of you, boys and girls, have ever heard of a gyroscope? I have one here with me this morning. See, it looks like a small wheel within a larger one. (Display for all to see.) I can wind up the smaller wheel so that it will spin, but the outer wheel remains still.

This little instrument maintains an even balance, no matter where it is put. (Demonstrate by putting it on the edge of a glass, tip of a peg, etc.)

Not only does the gyroscope maintain an even balance for itself, but it keeps upright whatever it is placed on, or in. For instance, let us wind it up and place it in this box, fastening the lid. (Demonstrate, by placing box on the edge of dish, etc.) See, the box keeps upright no matter where it is placed!

The gyroscope is also a stabilizer. It keeps things steady, and in an upright position. A great maritime company is considering putting large gyroscopes in all of its ships to keep them steady and on an even keel even during a storm at sea. One large shipping company has already tried this instrument. What a wonderful invention! People will not fear to travel on stormy seas if the boat they are sailing in carries a gyroscope.

Now, boys and girls, the Christian is on a journey from earth to heaven, and on this pilgrim way, there are often many trying circumstances to face, and many storms to endure. These are called life's storms. (Suggest circumstances hard for a child to endure.) Man is so weak in himself, he could never endure these trying times, he would only topple over. But God has provided a gyroscope for the Christian,—a Living Gyroscope, in the person of the Lord Jesus. All that this little instrument can do for the ship upon a stormy sea, the Lord Jesus does, and more, for one tossed about on life's sea. (Tell how the Lord comforts, and strengthens a little child, in trying circumstances.)

He indwells the heart of every believer. "I will dwell in them and walk in them," the Word says in 2 Cor. 6:16. And in Gal. 2:20 Paul said, "Christ liveth in me." This blessed fact is true of all who have received the Lord Jesus as Saviour.

With the Lord Jesus dwelling in our hearts, boys and girls, we are able to remain upright in our Christian life, and not topple over, no matter what the circumstance or temptation, (1 Cor. 10:13.)

Like the ship upon a stormy sea, kept upright by the gyroscope, the Christian is able to pass through life's storms with a peace that passeth understanding, abiding in his heart. "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee; because he trusteth in Thee."—Isa. 26:3, and "When thou passeth through the waters I will be with thee."—Isa. 43:2.

Let us thank Him, boys and girls, for being to us, all that we need at all times and in every place and circumstance!
