God's Guideline on the Highway of Life

God's Guideline on the Highway of Life

"Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord."—Ps. 119:1

Highway engineers say that perhaps the greatest single life-saving device ever invented for use on the road, other than a careful driver, is the white line down the middle.

You have seen this line and the signs along the road that say "Don't cross solid line on your side."

We have them in every state. When the line is dotted, that means go ahead and pass a car if another isn't coming. When there are two solid lines, with a yellow one on your side, that means "Danger. Don't pass." These danger points are usually on curves and on hilltops. Foolish drivers who disregard these signs endanger themselves and innocent people.

For they are put there for a purpose. The engineers who designed the roads know just where you can pass safely and where you cannot. They know from experience and study. Their whole lives are devoted to building roads.

God, the builder of the road of life, has put similar signs on that highway to warn us of danger spots. Mankind has found from thousands of years of experience that certain areas should have certain rules and laws. God has provided these rules, given to us through men like Moses and even more through his Son Jesus Christ.

For example, through Moses he gave us the Ten Commandments. If we disregard these commandments, we hurt ourselves and others.

What are these road signs of life? Here are the main ten as we find them in the Old Testament:

  1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

  2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.

  3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

  4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

  5. Honour thy father and thy mother.

  6. Thou shalt not kill.

  7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.

  8. Thou shalt not steal.

  9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

  10. Thou shalt not covet.

Jesus gave us other road signs of life. And if we don't obey these also, we bring disaster on ourselves. Some of his main guiding sayings are:

"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. . . . Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."

"A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you."

He gave us other signs for the road of life, too many to mention here, but if we obey these, we shall live truly God-like lives.

God knows all the road of life. He knows far better than we the danger points. He knows our weaknesses. And he loves us so much he is pained when we disobey his warnings and bring grief to ourselves and his other children.

Traveling the highways or traveling the road of life, we have plenty of markers for safe going—if we only obey the signs!
